Five Ways to Protect Your Home While You're Away
Whatever the reason for being away from home, at Bill Pay Valet, we want to make sure you do everything possible to keep your property safe and secure.
The actions we mention below cost little to no money, and they may just save you from being the next victim of a burglary in your neighborhood.
#1. Hold Your Mail & Newspaper Delivery
Imagine a huge pile of mail on your front doorstep, or pouring out of your mailbox with newspapers strewn all about. That's like a big neon sign for burglars saying, "Yo! I'm all alone! Let's Party!" Not the best way to get your vaca off to a good start.
Even if it's just for a long weekend, put your mail on hold. The process is painless and can even be done online in just a few minutes. Go to the USPS Website here. You can hold your mail up to 30 days in advance or set it up for the next day. Your newspaper delivery will probably require a call.
#2. Keep Your Plans to Yourself
We get it. You want to share the excitement of your next adventure with your friends on social media. The problem is, not everyone's security settings are the same and you may end up disclosing your location to strangers that have no good intentions. Keep your plans under wraps until you get back and then unleash the images that will make everyone drool!
#3. Go Unplugged
Unplug all unnecessary appliances to protect your home from an electrical fire or a power surge. Things like TVs, toasters, coffee makers don't need to be plugged in while you're away. Save yourself the grief and just pull the plug.
#4. Fool 'Em
Get yourself a timer for your lights or even a TV and have them turn on at the usual time you're home. Continue to get your lawn mowed, or snow shoveled to give the impression that someone is home. You want to let the world think you're home, even if you're sipping margaritas two-thousand miles away!
#5. Lock It Up
Take all your valuables, such as jewelry and sensitive documents and place them in a safe at your bank or in a fire-proof safe. If anything happens, you'll still have your most valued possessions.
